READING WORKSHOP
Nothing Matters More Than Time Spent Reading: The Reading Workshop is one component of a balanced literacy program. It includes a mini lesson, student reading time, a mid workshop teaching point and a teaching share time which includes partner and book clubs.Small group instruction, guided reading, strategy lessons, book clubs, read aloud and interventions are all components of the reading workshop.Balanced Literacy also includes phonics, interactive read aloud and a writing workshop.
As students monitor for meaning, a variety of skills and strategy’s are used. Each strategy is taught explicitly and modeled daily for students. Fifth graders practice reading strategies and skills and develop common language by using each strategy. Strategy’s include activating prior knowledge, identifying main ideas, authors message and craft, figuring out new words in context, and envisioning.
